How I Journal
I started seriously journaling just after completing the first draft of what would eventually become Stolen Pieces. All the way back in November 2017. Its April 2019 as I write this, and though I try to journal as often as possible, it’s not a habit I’ve been able to do daily.
To be fair, I have very few un-hygiene related habits that get done daily. Well, or TV watching. I do love to watch TV.
But I digress. When I do journal, this is how:
First I open up with whatever is on my mind. Sometimes, this is where I put into words my biggest worry or anxiety of the moment. Something about writing it out gets it out of my head, at least a little, and allows me some breathing room.
Of course, I’m not always worried or anxious. Just most of the time. So this can also be where I summarize happy things, or recent events, or that I’ve got tickets for opening day of Avengers: Endgame and my husband has to work so looks like I’ll be going with my parents!
Then, I write down what I’m Thankful for. I do a gratitude list everyday. I try to be grateful for at least five things, but ten is better. These things range from big to small. From my children — all freaking five of them — to the citrus scented bubble bar I just got from Lush.
Being thankful on purpose, especially after venting about my worries or anxieties, helps create a serious mindset shift. Instead of focusing on the negative, I’m reminded about all the good in my life. There is always more good than bad.
I hope this helps if you’re looking to start journaling! Maybe one day I’ll be journaling as regularly as I watch Bob’s Burgers but lol, I doubt it.
